The barangay itself means “broken” or “trouble maker”. In the old origins of the barangay, the inhabitants of the barangay were not united as one, therefore naming it GUN-OB (scattered, disunited or broken).
Long ago, the barangay was headed by a Teniente del Barrio, first one being Mr. Gerlacio Patalinghug. After his term, he was succeeded by Mr. Esmael Baguio and Mrs. Elena Tumulak, whom in her administration, the Carajay road was built back when the means of transportation were still the caleza or the tartanilla. The first elected official was Barangay Captain Marcelino Vitos. It was during his time when the Lapu-Lapu City District Hospital (Opon) was built. After Vitos’s administration, Mrs. Rosario Ybanez succeeded him and the first Barangay Hall was built near A. Tumulak St.
The EDSA People Power Revolution in 1986 saw the succession for the OIC Barangay Captain. Mrs. Dionisia Pangue was appointed by OIC Mayor Silvente “Biting” Dignos until year 1989. 2 consecutive Barangay Captains oversaw the changes in Brgy. Gun-ob, acquiring vehicles, multicab, radio telephones, motorcycles and power supply. Mr. Victor Amodia’s term also improved the Barangay Hall as the present-day Brgy. Hall since it was constructed in 1995. 2 years later, Brgy. Gun-ob acquired Tanod patrols equipment, tents & garbage collector dump trucks for the segregation of solid waste.
The year 2000s paved the way for Barangay Councilors and SK Chairman to seek purpose for the betterment of Barangay Gun-ob’s economic & social residence. These include projects for National High School, Multi-Purpose Covered Court, warehouses and a training center. The source of living or income of Gun-obanons are carpentry, ship building & repairs, construction & technical workers, govt employees and employees of MEPZA (Mactan Export Processing Zone Authority). Year after year, Barangay Gun-ob saw the changes within its vicinity including the modern sports complex called “HOOPS DOME” and the new Lapu-Lapu City Central Fire Station.
In the end, Barangay. Gun-ob profiles itself with a mission & vision with 10 specific goals that highlights the barangay’s commitment to “effective, efficient, proactive, & responsive governance” to its constituents with lenient transparency, accountability and civic services (Lapu-Lapu City Tourism Facebook Post).
